IFNA Position Statement on Graduate Family Nursing Education: A Report on Status and Development

Description This webinar will present the development and content of the recently approved IFNA Graduate Family Nursing Education position statement. To complement the 2013 IFNA Statement on Pre-licensure Family Nursing Education, the Education Committee tackled the development of a position statement on family nursing education in graduate programs from 2015-2016 approved by the IFNA board in 2017. The current status of this position statement will be presented as well as the challenges of development. Steps in the development of the position statement started with a critical review of the literature and consultation with experts in graduate nursing from around the globe. The review focused on international nursing position statements, family nursing, graduate nursing education, graduate competencies and more specifically on graduate family nursing education. The position statement is based on the components of a professional educational curriculum – philosophy, student outcomes, content, strategies and evaluation. Suggested student or program outcomes, didactic content, and learning activities are presented. The statement concludes with a pedagogical model for graduate family nursing education. Challenges or issues include the role of position statements for a professional organization such as IFNA; conceptual definitions; and the importance of family nursing for non-advanced practice nurses as well as advanced practice nurses.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will identify at least one key component for graduate family nursing education.
